- Scope, clip-on or handheld. A scope replaces your day scope; a clip-on works with the one you have; a monocular or binocular is for finding and identifying animals before you take the rifle up.
- Thermal or digital night vision. Thermal shows heat, so it works in complete darkness and shows a warm animal against a cooler background. Digital day and night vision, such as the Alpex, shows a normal picture and needs some light at night, which is why those bundles include an IR torch.
- Sensor resolution. More pixels on the sensor gives more detail in the picture.
- Lens (focal length). A longer lens gives more magnification and a narrower view. A shorter lens gives a wider view for scanning close country.
- Rangefinder. Some models have a built-in laser rangefinder; check each listing.
